Sightseeing
Colorado is rich in natural beauty and history and the cabin is a great jumping off point for many of Colorado’s wonderful parks, tourist destinations, ghost towns and other historical sites. The cabin is located in Las Animas county in southern Colorado and is within reasonable (a few hours) driving distance of may of Colorado’s top destinations such as Pikes Peak, Royal Gorge Bridge and Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Pikes peek
Though not the highest peak in the state, Pikes Peak is the most traveled to mountain in North America and second in the world only to Mt Fuji in Japan. Today, over 6 million people reach the summit each year, either by foot, automobile, or railroad. Those who have reached the summit understand what Kathy Lee Bates felt when she reached the summit, and was inspired to write the poem “America the Beautiful.
This is a three to four hour drive from the cabin (170 miles)

cave of the winds
We were able to take a tour through the caves and go to Pikes Peak on the same day. This does not have anything on Carlsbad Caverns but it has other activities for the kids if you are willing to pay for them. We did a little panning for gem stones.
This is a tree hour drive from the cabin (147 miles)

royal gorge bridge
Royal Gorge Bridge and Park in Colorado is the most visited theme park and wildlife park in the Pikes Peak Region. This historical landmark features scenic beauty and natural attractions as well America’s highest Suspension Bridge, longest single-span Aerial Tram, steepest Incline Railway and the newest thrill ride, the world’s highest Sky-coaster.

Great sand dunes
Explore the tallest dunes in North America! Whether hiking, sliding, or exploring in a dunes wheelchair, the Great Sand Dunes are a unique wilderness area protected for all to enjoy.
This National Park & Preserve is about a two hour drive from the cabin (94 miles)

rio grande scenic railroad
This scenic train ride starts in Alamosa and goes to La Veta over the La Veta Pass. It is an all day trip the train departs on Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, at 9:30 in the morning and gets back to Alamosa around 5:30 pm.
